"It's been a long time since I've had my house keys in my pocket."

Adonis, 65, had been homeless for 15 years when he moved into his new home. His story is part of the Housing Rights program, developed by Provivienda and HOGAR SÍ. The main objective of this initiative is to transform public policies on homelessness and promote changes in the traditional system of response to this phenomenon

Instead of focusing on large centers and shelters, the program seeks to offer housing in the community as an alternative. Inspired by the Housing First methodology, permanent housing is provided to the homeless, accompanied by intensive health and social support.

At the same time, a deinstitutionalization process is carried out , prioritizing the participation and free choice of the people involved in this innovation project. The importance of personal choice is emphasized as a central element of the intervention and their involvement in the design of their own life plan is encouraged, while providing the necessary support to make informed and autonomous decisions.

This autonomy is one of the main differences between traditional care and that proposed by Provivienda and HOGAR SÍ, which is aligned with the Deinstitutionalization Strategy for a Good Life in Community, promoted by the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030, which reinforces the need to transform the care and assistance system, in this case for people in a situation of homelessness, offering care that is more respectful of people's autonomy

Housing gives people like Adonis, who require constant medical care, the opportunity to lay the groundwork for autonomy. In addition, he receives the necessary social and health support and the right tools to rebuild his life and prevent him from returning to living on the streets.
